True and Fascinating Canadian History

RCMP Graves Saskatchewan

Estimated count of RCMP graves in Saskatchewan: 1587

The Province of Saskatchewan is marked by the high number of deceased members of the Force who are buried throughout the province in a dozen or more cemeteries and stretching back to the early days of the North West Mounted Police (NWMP) beginning about the mid 1870's.

An excellent inspection and reporting system of graves has always been in existence by the RCMP throughout the Province of Saskatchewan. In collaboration with Parks Canada, and the Historical Society of Saskatchewan, the RCMP has kept the graves of deceased members of the Force in very, very good condition and with annual repairs.

Space does not allow for all the cemeteries in Saskatchewan to be listed, but two are mentioned here; the NWMP Cemetery at Fort Walsh, and the NWMP Cemetery at Maple Creek, SK.

Many years ago, the NWMP Cemetery at Fort Walsh, SK., was declared a National Historic Site. It comes under the care of The Department of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development. Originally, only a few deceased members of the NWMP were interred in the Cemetery, but about the mid 1960's regulations were relaxed and people with a pioneer background were also allowed to be buried in the Cenetery. Repairs are made to the Cemetery on an annual basis.

In years gone by, it was called the Old A Division Cemetery, but today it is known as the NWMPCemetery at Maple Creek, SK. Years ago, a fence was built arond the Cemtery to enhance its appearance.
